CAASNM and Nine Others Recognized with CHISPA Award

SANTA FE, NM – New Mexico Community Foundation (NMCF) is pleased to announce its 2015 Chispa Awards, recognizing nonprofits across the state that accomplish a lot with very little, helping to improve New Mexico communities. During the first half of December 2015, eight organizations each received an award and a $6,000 unrestricted grant to use for their organization’s general operations.

CAASNM Receives $122,000 from the Paso del Norte Health Foundation to Provide Nutritional Education to Preschoolers

The Community Action Agency of Southern New Mexico (CAASNM) has been awarded a $122,000 grant from the Paso del Norte Health Foundation for their Early Child Nutrition Education Program. The program provides essential nutritional education to preschoolers ages 3-5, trains home-based daycare providers, and includes workshops that engage providers, children, and their parents.

Community Action Agency of Southern NM Receives a $15,000 Donation from First American Bank

Community Action Agency of Southern New Mexico (CAASNM) has received a $15,000 donation from First American Bank. The generous donation will be used to fund eight Individual Development Accounts (IDAs) for low-income households through a partnership with Prosperity Works, the New Mexico Assets Consortium and Assets for Independence.CAASNM 1st American 1

CAASNM Hosting 2nd Annual ColorDash 5K Fun Run April 11th at NMSU

Community Action Agency of Southern New Mexico (CAASNM) and Citizens Bank will be holding its 2nd Annual CAAtch Me if You Can Color Dash 5K on Saturday, April 11, 2015. Check-in starts at 8:00 am with race day registration available and the race will start at 9:30 am in the NMSU Student Tailgate Parking Lot. ColorDash is a noncompetitive, family-friendly event in which participants are splashed with colored corn starch as they move through the route. There are discounts available for families, teams, NMSU students who provide their student IDs at registration, and the Deaf Community. Dawn Z. Hommer, CEO said “Last year our ColorDash attracted over 700 colorful runners who ran, walked or strolled. We would love to see 1,000 runners this year!” Partial proceeds from the ColorDash will be donated to CAASNM for its programs, which help low-income people in our community.

New or Gently Used Jackets Needed for 20th Annual Coats for Kids Drive

Community Action Agency of Southern New Mexico, US Bank, Comet Cleaners, Gold 101, and D2 Design are preparing for this year’s 20th Annual Coats for Kids program. During last year’s distribution event, volunteers were able to supply over 4,500 coats to low-income children aged 12 and under. Over 38,000 coats have been given to needy children in Dona Ana County, since the program began 1995.  Continue reading

CAASNM Employee Chosen to Present Doctoral Dissertation in Europe

Dr. Rodolfo Acosta-Pérez, the Director of Family Empowerment at the Community Action Agency of Southern New Mexico (CAASNM), has been invited to present his doctoral dissertation at the First World Conference of the Association for Borderlands Studies (ABS). Dr. Acosta-Pérez will travel to Joensuu, Finland and St. Petersburg, Russia in order to present his thesis, entitled “Conspicuous Consumption and Drug-Trafficking in the U.S.- Mexico Border” to an international audience on June 9-13, 2014.
