Community Action Agency of Southern New Mexico, US Bank, Comet Cleaners, Gold 101, and D2 Design are preparing for this year’s 20th Annual Coats for Kids program. During last year’s distribution event, volunteers were able to supply over 4,500 coats to low-income children aged 12 and under. Dr. Rodolfo Acosta-Pérez, the Director of Family Empowerment at the Community Action Agency of Southern New Mexico (CAASNM), has been invited to present his doctoral dissertation at the First World Conference of the Association for Borderlands Studies (ABS). Dr. Acosta-Pérez will travel to Joensuu, Finland and St. Petersburg, Russia in order to present his thesis, entitled “Conspicuous Consumption and Drug-Trafficking in the U.S.- Mexico Border” to an international audience on June 9-13, 2014.
Adela Trujillo, the Director of Family Wellness at the Community Action Agency of Southern New Mexico (CAASNM), has been selected as one of ten honorees for the Lewis Hine Award. The award is named for Lewis Wickes Hine, an early 20th century muckraker whose photos of child labor practices were instrumental to the passage of the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938, a federal law that protected children from workplace exploitation. Since 1987, the National Child Labor Committee (NCLC) has annually recognized ten people across the nation – five volunteers and five professionals – for their exemplary records of service to children and young adults. Las Cruces Sun-News 11/11/2013: The adage goes, “choose a job you love and you’ll never have to work a day in your life,” something Dawn Hommer adheres to every day in her role as CEO of the Community Action Agency of Southern New Mexico.
“My favorite part of the job is that I’m getting paid to do something I would do for free,” she said.
Through her position as CEO, Hommer and her team at the nonprofit organization work with low-income community members to fight poverty and help them work toward self-sustainability through meaningful programs and long-term services. Continue reading
